RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Rescue crews have responded Saturday morning to a vehicle crash off an Interstate 540 bridge just northeast of Raleigh, officials said.

The crash was reported just after 9:45 a.m. along I-540 eastbound between two bridges spanning the Neuse River along the highway just east of U.S. 401, according to Wake County authorities.
A vehicle crashed down an embankment between the two I-540 bridges, according to fire officials.
The left lane is closed on I-540 eastbound past Exit 18, while the left shoulder is closed on I-540 westbound past Exit 20, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.

Knightdale Fire Department and New Hope Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.

Rescue crews were focusing efforts on the gap between the two I-540 bridges over the Neuse River, according to NCDOT traffic cameras.
There was no word about when the scene would be clear or about any injuries.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash, Wake County officials said.
