APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Apex say they are investigating a “traffic fatality” after a person was found dead inside a burning car late Friday night.

The incident was first reported around 11:30 p.m. as a grass fire near the intersection of Horton Ridge Boulevard and Grants Pass Station Road, south of Humie Olive Road and just west of Apex Friendship Elementary School, Apex officials said.
The Apex Fire Department responded and discovered a vehicle “fully engulfed” in flames near the Friendship Station neighborhood, according to a Sunday morning Apex Police Department news release.

Soon, a person was found dead inside the burned car, police said.

“The investigation is ongoing as a Chapter 20 traffic fatality investigation,” Apex Deputy Police Chief Trevor Materasso said in the release.
The Apex Police Department is the primary investigating agency and is being assisted by the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services and the Wake County Medical Examiner’s Office.
