The Wake County crash happened just before 9:45 a.m. Saturday along I-540 eastbound in a narrow area between two bridges — each a different highway direction over the Neuse River just east of U.S. 401, according to Wake County authorities.
A pickup truck went off the eastbound lanes at the bridge, crashing down a steep embankment in the area between each span of the Neuse River and the greenway below, officials said.
During the crash down the embankment, the truck overturned and crashed on its roof on the ground, missing the river and nearby greenway.

The wreck killed at least one person, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Sunday. Eastbound I-540 was closed for hours during rescue efforts and while crews hoisted the truck back to the bridge above.
Crews gathered around the crashed truck under the bridge area and took at least one truck occupant from the scene.
