In a news release sent Monday afternoon, the city said the city manager has declared a water shortage condition, and Stage One water restrictions are being put in place.
The city said the goal of the restrictions is to shrink the average daily water demand by 10% in order to protect the city’s water supply for “essential needs.”
The restrictions include limiting lawn, shrubbery and garden irrigation to no more than two times per week. The city said residents can irrigate between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. using handheld devices, drip systems or automated sprinklers.
According to the city, residents east of Wesleyan Boulevard can irrigate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and residents west of Wesleyan Boulevard can irrigate on Thursdays and Sundays.
The city is also encouraging people with private irrigation systems to follow the same conservation efforts.

In addition to irrigation restrictions, Rocky Mount is also implementing the following:
- Washing vehicles at locations other than commercial car washes is prohibited
- Restaurants shall provide water only upon customer request
- Irrigation at city parks and other city-owned properties will be discontinued
- Spray grounds and city swimming pool operations will be discontinued
- Street sweeping operations will be suspended unless otherwise authorized
- The Water Resources Department will recall issued hydrant meters and suspend the issuance of new hydrant meters
Those people found to be in violation of the water conservation measures could face fines, warning notices and even termination of water service for repeat offenses, the city said.
“The City encourages all customers to continue conserving water by repairing leaks, reducing unnecessary water use, and practicing responsible water habits,” Rocky Mount officials wrote in the release. “Continued cooperation from residents, businesses, and organizations is essential to maintaining adequate water supplies.”
