NC inmates charged with attempted murder in alleged attack of detention officer

GASTONIA, N.C. (WJZY) — Two Gaston County inmates are accused of assaulting and attempting to kill a detention officer over the weekend.

Court records show that 32-year-old Travis Burrage and 30-year-old Christian Campbell were each charged with attempted first-degree murder and resisting a public officer. Burrage was also charged with assault by strangulation. 

The alleged attack occurred Sunday when the detention officer was attempting to have all inmates go back to their cells. 

Arresting documents show it caused serious injuries to the officer. He reportedly sustained scratches, cuts, and marks around the neck after being strangled by Burrage, causing distressed breathing.

Burrage, of Dallas, was in jail after a May 11 arrest where he was charged with probation violation tied to reckless driving and other traffic-related offenses. 

Campbell, of Gastonia, was booked Jan. 30 on four counts of a true bill of indictment tied to a felony. He was also charged with two more of the same on June 6.

They are now being held in jail without bond.
