One neighborhood near Dabney Drive is dealing with large trees downed by powerful winds.
Neighbors said they knew there would be wind, but they did not think it would take down trees.
“We knew from radar that that things were building up, but we thought it was going to fizzle out,” said Charles Crumpler.
Crumpler said he saw fallen trees on his way home Monday evening, and when he arrived, he saw limbs on his roof and a 15-foot tree lying in his yard.
“When we turned onto our corner, we couldn’t get down the street,” Crumpler said. “That’s when stomachs bottomed out. We were nervous as could be. We anticipate thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to our home and yard.”
The heating of the day, along with an abundant amount of energy and humidity in the atmosphere made the storms especially strong and capable of producing damaging straight-line winds as they moved in from the base of the mountains Monday night.

Several homes on Oakdale Circle were damaged.
Lashaunda Speed said her whole family was home the moment a tree tore through the side of her home.
“I heard a loud boom, and me and my kids ran outside,” Speed said. “Then I tried to run to my basement with some of my neighbors. It happened like at once. When we came back to the front yard, everything was destroyed.”
Jody Proctor said he hired crews to clean up the mess immediately. He said he needs a new roof and porch. He adds two cars were damaged, one is totaled.
“My daughter and friend were home, and my daughter was in the shower when she heard the house shake,” Proctor said. “She thought was thunder. And when she came out, she found a tree in the yard and all this damage.”
Neighbors said they are thankful everyone made it out safely and nobody was hurt.
