NC State, Virginia football cleared to play relocated season opener

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Following the cancellation of their season opener in what would’ve been the first ever college football game played in Brazil, the North Carolina State Wolfpack and Virginia Cavaliers have been approved to play their relocated game.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee has approved a waiver for the two teams to play the game in Week 0 of the 2026 season. The matchup will be played at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, Aug. 29, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.

“The waiver approval preserves the original date for the conference matchup after the contest was moved from its previously announced international location,” the conference said in a release. “The ACC has worked collaboratively with NC State, Virginia, the NCAA and ESPN to maintain the game on the originally scheduled date.”

The two teams played last season in a non-conference matchup at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The Wolfpack won that game on Sept. 6 by a score of 35-31.
