According to the Smithfield Police Department, officers responded around 5 a.m. to a shooting at a manufacturing facility in the 2100 block of Wal-Pat Road. They found Lorena Capera Paz suffering from a gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Jesus Antonio Tenorio Bermudez, who was determined to have been married to Capera Paz, according to Smithfield police.
About four hours after the shooting, around 9 a.m., police said they arrested Bermudez at his home and charged him with first-degree murder.

Police said Bermudez is being held at the Johnston County Detention Center without bond. His first appearance in Johnston County court is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, loved ones, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence,” Smithfield police said in a news release. “We are grateful for the swift response of everyone involved, which led to the suspect’s safe apprehension. Thank you to our community for your patience and support as this investigation continues.”
According to court documents, Bermudez was placed under an ICE detainer because records indicate he either lacks immigration status or his status is removable under federal law.
Court documents show the U.S. Department of Homeland Security filed an administrative warrant to have Bermudez remain in custody for removal proceedings.
