Multiple days of 100+ degree temperatures arrive this week in central NC

It’s been hot at times this year, but nothing compared to what’s coming. A seasonable overnight, with lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s under partly cloudy skies, will give way to afternoon highs in the middle 90s on Wednesday for the first day of July.

And that’s just the beginning.

The forecast high for Thursday is 100 degrees — the actual air temperature, not the heat index. Temperatures and heat index values climb even higher for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with 102-103 each day and feels-like values of 105-110+.

The only good news with high pressure overhead for the Fourth of July is that rain chances are minimal at best. Most places will stay dry but exceptionally hot, with temperatures likely still in the upper 80s for evening fireworks shows.

The high-pressure ridge slowly starts to break down early next week, allowing scattered rain chances back into the forecast. Intense heat will also begin to back off, with highs in the middle to upper 90s instead of passing 100 degrees.
