SPRUCE PINE, N.C. (WSPA/WNCN) — An attempt to serve a warrant on a child sex crime suspect in western North Carolina Friday led to the suspect’s death and a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agent being hit by a bullet, officials said.

According to the NCSBI, agents attempted to serve an arrest warrant near the 1200 block of NC Highway 226 in Spruce Pine on 52-year-old Timothy Alan Hoilman, who was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a child age 15 or younger and two counts of statutory sex offense with a child age 15 or younger.
While serving the warrant, according to the NCSBI, Hoilman drew a concealed gun.
Agents said Hoilman shot himself during the incident, but did not say if the gunshot was intentional. Hoilman was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The bullet that killed Hoilman also struck an agent in his protective vest. The agent did not require medical assistance, according to the NCSBI.
No further information has been provided by the NCSBI as of Friday afternoon. The incident remains under investigation.
