FAA, NTSB investigating RDU taxiway collision between private jet, box truck

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating a Wednesday afternoon collision between a private jet and a box truck on an RDU taxiway.

“Well, these sorts of things should never happen,” said local aviation attorney James Crouse.

No one was hurt during the incident, but the plane involved sustained significant damage to the nose.

“It’s beyond me how these things happen, but they do,” said Crouse.

The FAA says the collision happened when the truck crossed the taxiway on a service road that is not controlled by air traffic controllers.

“These drivers are trained, or supposed to be trained, to look for not only airplanes but other vehicles on these taxiways. They’re supposed to pay attention to flashing lights on airplanes, meaning that the engines are running,” Crouse explained.

It’s not clear what led to the collision or who cleared the truck to cross the taxiway. While that’s under investigation, Crouse says it can be difficult for pilots to see their surroundings while taxiing.

“There is what I would call limited visibility out of the front end of any commercial aircraft, so they can’t see everything that is behind them, certainly, and they have limited view peripherally,” Crouse said.

The collision shut down the airport for about an hour on Wednesday, causing delays and diversions.
