FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A scam is targeting the families of inmates in Cumberland County, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.
According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, scammers are contacting inmates’ family members to falsely claim that money must be paid to have the inmate placed on pretrial release.
These calls and messages are a scam intended to steal from the inmates’ families, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call, tax, or message anyone to request a payment for inmate’s release, pretrial release, or any other purpose related to their custody.

Do not send money or provide any personal or financial information if you receive a call or message requesting money for an inmates’ release.
