Heat takes over this weekend in central NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Heat is building back into central North Carolina today, with afternoon highs climbing into the mid to upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.

Dry conditions will remain firmly in place as temperatures continue to rise through the weekend. By Sunday, highs are expected to push into the 90s, kicking off several days of early-season heat. From Sunday through Wednesday, temperatures will run just a few degrees shy of daily record highs.

Current forecasts keep us narrowly below those records, but it would not take much for one or two records to fall during the hottest part of next week.

The combination of heat and dry weather will persist through midweek before a potential pattern change develops late in the week. Confidence is increasing in a better chance for rain next Thursday and possibly Friday as a cold front approaches the region and interacts with a weak area of low pressure.

That setup could finally spread more widespread moisture across the area Thursday, with the low potentially tracking offshore afterward and helping to keep showers around into Friday. While it’s too early to pin down rainfall totals, this system currently looks more promising than some of the recent weak fronts that have struggled to produce meaningful rain.

Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, the early forecast is encouraging. Temperatures appear set to stay in the 80s with mostly dry conditions expected across much of the region. As always, forecast details will become clearer as we get closer to the holiday weekend.
