FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Fayetteville said one person was killed and a juvenile was injured in a shooting near the Smith Recreation Center early Sunday morning.

The shooting was reported by ShotSpotter alerts just after 4 a.m. in the Newark Avenue area, according to a Fayetteville Police Department news release.
Police arrived and found numerous shell casings in the area off Murchison Road just north of Smith Recreation Center, the release said.
During a search for more evidence, police found “a male gunshot victim” on the ground in the 700 block of State Avenue, at the corner of Newark Avenue, officers said.

EMS crews arrived and said the male shooting victim was dead.
Related to the shooting, a male juvenile victim arrived at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries and was stable later Sunday morning, police said.

The Fayetteville Police Department Homicide Unit is now investigating the matter.

“This is an active investigation,” police said in the release. “This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.”
