SEAFORTH, N.C. (WNCN) — The body of a teenager swimmer who went missing on Jordan Lake during the Fourth of July was found the following afternoon, Chatham County deputies said.

According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s office, a teenager disappeared on Saturday, July 4, around 6:30 p.m. while with family on a boat in Jordan Lake.
At the time of their disappearance, according to the sheriff’s office, the teenager was swimming from the family’s boat when they “encountered trouble” in the water.
Deputies said they searched for the teenager through Saturday night. They continued on Sunday morning, but were forced to suspend the search around 4 p.m. due to severe weather in the area, including thunderstorms and heavy rain.

While emergency personnel were preparing to leave, according to the sheriff’s office, the teenager’s body was found by a North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officer.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is not identifying the teenager due to their age and out of respect for their family.
“Our hearts are with this young person’s family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time,” Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson said in a statement. “We are grateful to the many agencies and personnel who dedicated their time, expertise and resources throughout this search.”
