RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The 12-year-old girl who vanished while swimming in the Neuse River in Wake County late Tuesday morning has died from her injuries, deputies said on Wednesday.

According to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:30 a.m. to a report of a possible drowning in the area of Raleigh Beach near the Neuse River Greenway Trail and Loch Raven Parkway.
Witnesses told deputies that a girl was swimming in the Neuse River when she went under the water and did not resurface. By the time first responders arrived, she had already been pulled from the water, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Late Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office said the girl had died.
“On behalf of the entire Wake County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family,” Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a statement. “Please keep all who have been affected by this tragedy in your prayers.”
