RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — He was an institution at Ravenscroft High School.
Three years ago, Ned Gonet retired as head football coach of the Ravens after a North Carolina high school record 42 years at one school. Now, he’s doing the same after a record-breaking run of 45 years as Ravenscroft athletic director.

“45 years at one place is a long tenure, it’s almost five decades,” Gonet said.

Gonet coached multiple sports at Ravenscroft, leading his teams to 13 state finals appearances, eight of which resulted in state championships. Gonet won big at Ravenscroft, but it’s not what he’ll remember the most.

“Yeah, obviously we wanted to win, we wanted to make the marks if we put the time in, but I also felt I had a true responsibility to help those young people develop,” Gonet said.

Gonet had plenty of chances to coach elsewhere, both at the high school ranks as well as college, including passing up an opportunity to coach baseball at his alma mater, Duke.
“Now, quite often they’d come back, and some would say, ‘Listen, you were tough on us, you were disciplined and had expectations, but it’s funny how I’m carrying that on in my life with my kids, with my career and things that I’m doing; you left a foundation.’ Gonet said. “To me, that was the most important thing to come back.”
