Storms again Sunday, then slightly cooler for central NC

After another hot and humid day with strong storms, changes are coming to the forecast as early as Sunday! A cold front will bring not only chances for rain and storms, but cooler temperatures down into the 80s for the first time since late June.

Before the really cool air arrives, storms Sunday still have the potential to become strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of central North Carolina, mainly southwest of the Triangle, under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather.

The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, small hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential downpours, and localized flash flooding where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Because of the increased cloud cover as well as pockets of rain, Sunday will be a cooler day with highs in the 80s, but then behind the front, cooler, less humid air really settles in on Monday with afternoon highs only in the middle 80s, plus overnight lows dropping into 60s.

After several days of triple-digit heat index values, it will be a welcome break and some of the most comfortable weather we’ve experienced in weeks.

Don’t get too used to it, though. The summer heat builds back into the region during the second half of next week, with highs climbing back into the mid to upper 90s by Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the slight cool-down while we have it!
