4th arrest made in Raleigh ‘teen takeover’ shootings during Fourth of July celebrations: Police

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A fourth teenager was arrested Wednesday in connection with multiple shootings in Raleigh during Fourth of July celebrations, police said.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers obtained a secure custody order for a 16-year-old wanted in a shooting in the 600 block of Glenwood Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on July 5.

Police said the 16-year-old was taken into custody and charged with:

• Two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury
• Going armed to the terror of the public
• Possession of a firearm by a minor
• Three counts of discharging a firearm within city limits

The 16-year-old is being held at a juvenile detention facility, according to Raleigh police.

The shooting in the 600 block of Glenwood Avenue was one several that took place as part of a “teen takeover” that brought thousands of teenagers to Raleigh during Fourth of July weekend.

According to Raleigh police, the incidents began on July 4 around 10:30 p.m. in Brier Creek when 3,000 teenagers gathered to the area. A fight led to gunshots being fired, resulting in an adult bystander being shot and another being injured by shattered glass.

Police said about 5,000 teenagers then gathered to Glenwood South, where multiple shootings took place between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., including the incident in the 600 block of Glenwood Avenue. Six people were shot during these incidents.

Around 4:30 a.m., according to Raleigh police, another shooting was reported at a gas station in the 800 block of Capital Boulevard, leaving two people with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the Capital Boulevard incident is related to the earlier shootings.

A total of nine people were shot in the teen takeover.

The 16-year-old is the fourth arrested in connection with these incidents, according to Raleigh police.

Police said another 16-year-old is charged in the shooting in the 10 block of Glenwood Avenue. A second 16-year-old, Justin Brown, was taken into custody in the shooting in Brier Creek. A 17-year-old is also facing charges in the Brier Creek incident.

As of Thursday morning, police said the investigation into teen takeover shootings remains ongoing.
