DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Triangle basketball legend returned to his roots this past weekend to give back to his local community of Durham.

New Orleans Pelicans star and Durham native Trey Murphy III hosted his 3rd annual Back to School Bash on Saturday at I. R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills.
During the event, residents and families of the Bull City got receive free things, such as backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts.
They were also able to receive free community resources and participate in different kinds of games and arts & crafts.
“My goal is to impact kids in a positive way,” Murphy III said. “Being able to hold events like this and talk to kids, sign autographs, and coach them is something I really enjoy doing and something I wanted as a child.”

Earlier that day, Murphy III held a youth basketball camp at Hillside High School for kids ages 8 to 14 to help improve the young campers’ skills as well has have fun participating in athletic games and competitions.

“This means the world,” Murphy III said. “This is the community I grew up in. I used to run around Campus Hills. I used to run around Hillside as a child. The camp growing and a lot more kids coming out and really enjoying what’s been coming along in this has been special to me.”
Murphy III was a standout at Cary Academy in high school, following up that with an impressive college career at both Rice and Virginia. He has followed up that success with even more success in the NBA.

Murphy III averaged 21 points a game for the Pelicans over the last two seasons and had career highs in rebounding and assists just last season. He said he is more than ready for his sixth NBA season to begin.
“I’m in a great spot,” Murphy III said. “I’m probably the most athletic I have been in my entire life, and this is the best my body has ever felt.”
