BURLINGTON, N.C. (WGHP) — Burlington city leaders are reconsidering the rules about raising chickens in yards within city limits.

It’s currently prohibited, but leaders are open to changing that and heard some public opinion.
The city put out a survey and got a whopping 1,500 responses on the topic. Community Engagement Manager Morgan Lasater said staff is going through the results now and creating data to show the council at an August work session.
“We’re seeing a common theme of extremely wanting chickens to extremely not wanting chickens. … For us, that means that maybe that middle population of folks who aren’t as passionate one way or the other didn’t respond,” Lasater said.
Lasater said it has been about five years since leaders considered the ordinance and are doing so now at the request of some members of the public.
“Recently, we had some more public comment come in and ask our city council members to consider this again,” Lasater said.

Lasater said all comments in the survey will be considered, and there were responses in English and Spanish.
If the council moved toward changing the ordinance, there would be a public hearing offering more time and space for people to share input on the ordinance.
“Kind of a common theme for us, which we expected, was that folks do not want roosters within our city, which I think was not a surprise to us, and do want some limits on numbers if there are some chickens here,” Lasater said.
City officials are still working to create a presentation with the nuanced responses in the survey, and the city council will discuss the results at their August work session.
