REIDSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A Reidsville couple who recently welcomed a daughter are honoring their son who died from a rare genetic condition three years ago.

It’s been more than four years since we first introduced you to Jahavier and Ryan Walker and their child, Tate, who was born in 2021 with anophthalmia, meaning he did not have eyes.
The couple says after enduring several health complications, Tate passed away on June 15, 2023, at 18-months-old.
‘Never Thought We Would Have Another’
Now, three years later, the couple has a new healthy baby girl, whom they named after Tate.
Tatum is a healthy baby girl born on May 6, 2026, and her parents can’t get enough of her.
“Joy is not the word … We never thought we would have another one after Tate, so she’s everything to us,” Jahavier said.

With pictures hung on the wall throughout the house, the couple always thinks of their firstborn, Tate.
“Tate was born Dec. 5, 2021. He was born with a rare genetic condition with a … gene mutation, so he was born without eyes. They never fully developed … Along with that complication, he had complications of feeding,” Ryan said.
Despite the challenges, Tate kept a gorgeous little smile on his face. The couple has endured the grief of losing him for years.
“You just wish you had both,” Jahavier said.

‘He’s Living Through Her’
After praying for a miracle, their answer came in the form of a little girl.
“She looks just like her big brother. Spitting image … We know that he’s living through her. The stuff that he didn’t get to do, we’ll be able to see Tatum do, and that just helps us reflect back on Tate also,” Ryan said.
In honor of Tate’s memory, the couple hosts a fundraiser called Tate’s Pumpkin Patch every year, and all the proceeds go towards a special family in the community enduring health conditions.
