According to the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and emergency crews responded on May 10 to the 1400 block of Pocomoke #1 Drive in Franklinton near Bruce Garner Road.
When officers arrived on scene, deputies said they found a 5-month-old infant unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel were able to revive the baby after being transported to a nearby hospital, but deputies said she was placed on life support due to the severity of her injuries.
Deputies said they were able to determine that the 5-month-old was abused based on the injuries she sustained.
“In an effort to seek justice for the infant, the Granville County Sheriff’s Office immediately initiated an investigation into the incident and executed a search warrant at the residence,” the news release said. “Throughout the investigation, detectives worked closely with Granville County Child Protective Services.”

Deputies said they identified 34-year-old John Wheeler, the child’s father, as the abuser because he was the sole care provider at the time the injuries occurred.

“Detectives made multiple attempts to interview Wheeler regarding the circumstances surrounding the child’s injuries,” the news release said.
According to court documents, Wheeler was arrested on May 13 for felony child abuse inflicting serious injuries. Deputies said once they learned that the 5-month-old baby succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on May 16, Wheeler was then charged with second-degree murder.
“The Granville County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident,” said Sheriff Robert Fountain.
Wheeler remains in custody at the Granville County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 16 at the Granville County Courthouse.
