A Heat Advisory is in effect this afternoon for parts of central North Carolina, with heat index values expected to climb above 107°. The combination of temperatures in the low to mid-90s and high humidity will make it feel exceptionally hot.

There will be a brief break from the worst of the heat after Friday as a weak front moves through, with temperatures dropping closer to 90° this weekend. However, the relief will be short-lived, with temperatures climbing back into the mid-to-upper 90s by the start of next week. For much of the forecast period, heat remains the biggest weather story.
Rain chances will stay limited, with the best opportunity for showers and thunderstorms coming this weekend. Even then, rain coverage is expected to peak around 30%, meaning most locations will remain dry.
The summertime pattern is providing plenty of heat and humidity but not much in the way of large-scale lift to trigger widespread storms. Instead, we will rely on the usual summertime mechanisms: an isolated afternoon pop-up or an organized storm complex developing upstream and moving into the area late in the afternoon or evening.
Any storm that does develop could produce heavy rain and gusty winds, but widespread severe weather is not expected.
Our eyes also remain on the tropics, with several tropical waves moving across the Atlantic. At this time, there are no immediate or forecast tropical threats to North Carolina.
However, hurricane season is entering a more active part of the climatological calendar, so we will continue watching every wave that moves across the Atlantic. The CBS 17 Storm Team will keep you updated throughout the season as conditions evolve and any potential tropical threats emerge.
