2 students facing charges after gun and ammo found at Durham high school: Sheriff

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Two high school students in Durham are facing charges after a gun and ammunition were found on campus Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, multiple students at the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability were involved in a fight on campus Monday afternoon. Following the incident, a staff member was told that one of the students involved had a gun.

The day after the fight, according to officials, the high school was placed on a lockdown around 10:15 a.m. while deputies searched for the student believed to have the gun.

During the search, deputies said they discovered a different student with a firearm and a third student in possession of ammunition.

Durham Public Schools said the student found with a gun on Tuesday was involved in Monday’s fight.

Both the student found with the gun and the student found with ammunition are juveniles. They were held for questioning and juvenile petitions and secure custody orders are being sought, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the student believed to have a gun on Monday did not come to school on Tuesday.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The lockdown was lifted at 10:45 a.m., according to district officials.

“I applaud the quick actions of our [School Resource Officers] working in conjunction with Durham Public Schools security and Southern High School staff to bring this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion,” Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said in a statement.
