RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A tropical wave that has emerged off the west coast of Africa is starting to gradually become more organized and could become a tropical depression within the coming days.

Odds for development are now to up 70% within the next two to seven days as it moves over an area of warm water where there is currently weaker wind shear.
Since the current environment is somewhat favorable for development, the National Hurricane Center forecasts that as the wave continues moving west-northwestward, more organization could take place, leading to the possible formation of a tropical depression withing the coming days.
However, by the weekend, conditions will become more hostile and if a tropical depression hasn’t developed by the weekend, it may struggle to develop going forward.
If it manages to develop, models are fairly confident that a ridge of high pressure will push it west before it curves around the edge of the high pressure and into the central Atlantic, away from the United States.

Depending on the strength of the system (if it develops) and where the center ends up, there could be variability in that eventually track, but if anything tropical develops, it would be more than a week away from approaching the United States coastline.
We have only had three named storms so far this hurricane season. On average, the fourth named storm forms August 15th, meaning we are “behind schedule” in terms of named storms. With that being said, a below-average hurricane season has been forecast by NOAA with 7-13 totals storms forecast due to the presence of a strong El Niño.
Regardless of how many storms develop, it only takes one to bring impacts.
