A stalled front will give us a better chance for showers and thunderstorms this weekend, but don’t expect a major cooldown. The front will move through, then stall nearby, keeping additional moisture and instability in place through Saturday and Sunday. With temperatures remaining in the lower 90s and plenty of humidity, a few storms could become strong, producing gusty winds, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall. Rain coverage will remain isolated, so not everyone will see a storm, but the weekend offers our best opportunity for rain in several days.

The front will eventually lose its influence, allowing the heat to build again early next week. Temperatures are expected to climb back into the mid to upper 90s, with humidity making it feel even hotter during the afternoon. By the middle of next week, there are signs of a subtle pattern change that could bring temperatures back toward the lower 90s. While that would provide some relief, it would still be warm for August.
We’re also keeping a close eye on the tropics as activity increases across the Atlantic. Several tropical waves are being monitored, but there is currently no tropical threat to North Carolina or the mainland United States over the next week. The CBS 17 Storm Team will continue tracking the tropics as we move deeper into the heart of hurricane season, while here at home the focus remains on weekend storms followed by another stretch of summer heat.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with a few late-day storms. The high will be 92. Winds will be out of the north at 5 miles per hour.
OVERNIGHT will be with storms ending. The low will be 73. Winds will be west, then north at 5 miles per hour.
