Crews removing debris after cracked concrete found at Interstate 85/40 Haw River bridge in Alamance County

GRAHAM, N.C. (WGHP/WNCN) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is still working at the Interstate 85/40 bridge over the Haw River after cracks in concrete were discovered under the structure.

The NCDOT says that there was no structural damage to the bridge near mile marker 149 and that traffic was safe to cross as normal. Crews were to start repairing the damage the first week of September, with work slated to continue until at least Friday, officials said Thursday.

Photos of cracked concrete underneath the bridge, as well as debris, gained traction on social media in late August. By Thursday, crews had removed a large chunk of concrete that was hanging under the bridge.

Debris under the bridges includes large driftwood pieces that are resting next to the bridge, according to NCDOT. Crews plan on clearing the debris by Friday, officials said.

Officials said Thursday that work to clear the debris could take longer if the river is at a high level.

Separately, crews plan to work in the same area from September 14 to 18 for logo sign maintenance and placard installations.

NCDOT says the driftwood became stuck at the bridge due to high waters from a major storm and said there was no damage to the bridge or safety concerns for traffic.
