Damage in Wendell, Raleigh with 6,000+ customers without power as storms hit central NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Damage was reported in Wake County as storms hit central North Carolina Saturday afternoon, with a large awning collapsing in Wendell, and part of Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh blocked by a fallen tree.

Also, more than 5,000 customers in Raleigh and Durham areas were without power Saturday afternoon as a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect until 8 p.m.

In Wendell, part of a roof awning collapsed at the Refuel convenience store at 2301 Wendell Falls Parkway at Wendell Valley Boulevard, a Wendell town spokesperson said. There was no word about injuries.

Earlier, a tree fell in Raleigh, blocking lanes in the 2900 block of Glenwood Avenue, near Oberlin Road and the Carolina Country Club, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

In Durham, the severe weather delayed the kickoff for Duke’s home football game against Tulane on Saturday. The game was moved back 90 minutes from the start due to severe weather in the area.

Duke Energy reported that about 2,000 customers in the Raleigh area were without electricity, with the outages split between north Raleigh/Wake County and northeast Raleigh along Buffaloe Road.

A large area southeast of Raleigh and just inside Johnston County has more than 3,000 power outages, with the outages in several areas.

Meanwhile, in Durham County, there are about 800 power outages, according to Duke Energy.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, a round of storms hit northern Wake and Durham counties, triggering a severe thunderstorm warning that was later allowed to expire.

Hail was reported in north Raleigh as the round of storms came through that coincided with the power outages.
