Update as of 11:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9:

A horrific scene unfolded on Erie’s East Side Friday night as gunfire claimed multiple lives.

Erie police were called to the scene just before 5 p.m. Friday evening.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah told anchor Jennifer Mobilia this is by far the worst crime scene he has ever seen in his almost 30 years in law enforcement.

He said right now, investigators are trying to piece everything together and trying to figure out what exactly happened.

While he can’t confirm much right now, he repeatedly said the number of lives lost Friday night was devastating.

Around 4:50 Friday afternoon Erie police were called to the 700 block of Perry Street for a report of two women shot outside of a home.

Witnesses told police the gunman then ran into a nearby home.

“Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy. There are no words that can be adequately expressed the magnitude of the loss of life here,” said Chief Lorah.

The Erie SWAT team and dozens of police officers quickly surrounded the home.

Once officers secured a warrant, they busted their way in.

Law enforcement sources told Mobilia the scene inside the home was horrific. Multiple bodies, including two small children, were found.

“It’s our understanding that bodies were found on at least two floors of the home,” said Mobilia.

”Yeah, it’s a horrific scene,” replied Lorah. “There was a large loss of life inside that residence and outside that residence.”

Lorah then went on to say, “I can’t confirm or deny the amount of individuals that were involved here. I can tell you that this is a tragic, tragic situation.”

One thing Erie’s police chief said he can confirm — There is no threat to the community.

“The suspect is deceased.  It appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Lorah.

As for what led up to the events Friday, Lorah said this investigation is going to take some time.

At this point, they’re still trying to figure out how or if the suspect knew the victims.

“We will not speculate about a motive, or at least information that could compromise this investigation,” said Lorah.

As of 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, that section of Perry Street from 7th to 8th was still blocked off

Chief Lorah said he hopes to be able to give us more information on Saturday.

The City of Erie released a statement regarding this event, saying:

Tonight, a terrible tragedy occurred near 7th and Perry Streets in Erie, resulting in multiple deaths.

We understand that this news brings deep shock and sorrow to our residents, and we want to assure the public that the situation has been contained. The shooter is deceased, and there is no ongoing threat or danger to the public at this time.

Update as of 9:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9:

Erie Police remain at a scene that Chief Rick Lorah has described tonight as the worst situation in his 28-plus years of law enforcement and “the loss of life is devastating.”

Police responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. on Friday and have had the area of East 8th Street and Perry Street shut down ever since.

The scene is a home in the 700 block of Perry Street.

Earlier tonight, Lorah confirmed two women had been shot to death, but he would not confirm or update the number of victims during a briefing with reporters shortly before 9 p.m. Lorah would only say repeatedly say there was a large loss of life and called the scene “most difficult and heartbreaking.”

Chief Lorah also said the suspect is dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Lorah told JET Action News that the police do not have any information regarding a possible motive.

Erie Police are continuing to process the scene and people should avoid the area.
