Durham murder arrest made after woman shot dead while driving, passenger injured: Warrant

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A man has been arrested on a murder charge after a woman driving in southern Durham was shot and killed Saturday afternoon, according to arrest warrants.

The shooting, which also injured a woman riding in the car, was reported just after 1:30 p.m. while the vehicle was heading south on Revere Road toward Sedwick Road, according to a Durham Police Department news release.

Gunshots were fired into the vehicle, hitting the woman who was driving, police said. She died at the scene, officers said.

The wounded female passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with what did not appear to be life-threatening injuries, the news release said.

Lontrel Diray Alston, 38, of Durham, was arrested on Saturday and faces several charges, according to an arrest warrant filed by a Durham police officer.

Alston is accused of firing a gun into a Mitsubishi Outlander while it was at the corner of Revere and Sedwick roads, the warrant said.

The Outlander was occupied by two women and a man, with one of the women killed in the shooting, according to the warrant.

Police said Alston is facing the following charges:

  • First-degree murder
  • Felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill (2 counts)
  • Felony discharged a weapon in occupied property
  • Felony habitual misdemeanor assault

Police said Saturday that the shooting was “an isolated incident, and there is no danger to the public.”

Alston is being held without bond in the Durham County Detention Center.

His first court appearance is scheduled for late Monday morning in Durham County District Court.
