SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WNCN) — A Spring Lake family is turning heartbreak into a mission to help prevent youth gun violence and keep their son’s memory alive.

The Harryson L. Anderson Foundation will hold its first fundraiser Saturday, August 22, the day Harryson Anderson would have turned 18.
Anderson was a 17-year-old Fayetteville Technical Community College student who was shot and killed in March during a Spring Break house party in Fayetteville.
His mother, Nina Anderson, said a bullet struck her son in the back of the neck after he walked away from an altercation. His parents said Harryson spent the evening with friends, getting food and going to a movie, before the group stopped at a party they saw advertised on social media.
A 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death. Now, his family is turning their grief into action.
The Harryson L. Anderson Foundation will host a charity basketball game all day this Saturday at Ascend Leadership Academy in Sanford, where Harryson graduated last year.

The event will raise money for an annual $2,500 scholarship for an Ascend senior. The foundation also plans to support families impacted by youth gun violence who need financial assistance and fund anti-violence outreach efforts.

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Opening remarks begin at 10 a.m., with games continuing until 6 p.m. Tickets are $10. There will also be a ballon release, a dedication ceremony, and food trucks.
