Garner man charged with murder, child abuse after toddler dies in bathtub: Warrant

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — A Garner man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say a 14-month-old child died after being left unattended in a bathtub filled with water.

Angel Israel Deras-Rivas, 19, was charged Sunday with murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury in connection with the child’s death, according to a Wake County arrest warrant.

According to the warrant, investigators allege Deras-Rivas showed “reckless disregard for human life” by leaving the child unattended in a bathtub full of water while caring for the 14-month-old child. The warrant states the child died as a result.

The warrant alleges Deras-Rivas was caring for the child as the child’s stepfather and the husband of the child’s mother at the time of the incident.

The arrest warrant does not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Court records show Deras-Rivas faces one count of murder and one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Wake County District Court on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
