RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The civil trial for the October 2022 mass shooting in Raleigh’s Hedingham neighborhood will not begin until next year, court records show.

Survivors and the estates of the victims of the shooting filed a lawsuit in Wake County Superior Court against perpetrator Austin Thompson, who pleaded guilty in February to killing five people and injuring two more when he was 15.
Also named as defendants in the lawsuit are Thompson’s parents, Alan and Elise, property management company Hedingham Community Association and security guard service Capitol Special Police.

The civil trial was scheduled to begin in July, but court records show it will instead begin in January 2027.

The new start date comes after Capitol State Police filed a motion in April to delay the trial.
Thompson is serving five life sentences without parole. He has appealed his sentence.
