Look up! Dozens of meteors expected to fly across the NC sky Wednesday night

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — One of the best meteor showers of the year is peaking Wednesday night.

The Perseids dazzle stargazers every August, with dozens of meteors per hour being likely. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. is the best time to head outside and look up.

This year there’s a new moon, meaning the shooting stars won’t have to compete with the bright moon light. 

For the best viewing, look straight up to the darkest part of the sky and get away from city lights. Any meteors you spot will be zipping across the sky, moving at around 37 miles per second. 

We will have to battle a few lingering clouds, but there should still be opportunities for clear sky conditions.

If you don’t want to wait up for this meteor shower, there are several more this year. 

The Epsilon Perseids will be next month, Orionids in October, Leonids in November and rounded out by the Geminids in December. 

So you have a really good chance of seeing at least a handful of meteors before the year comes to an end.
