LINVILLE, N.C. (WNCN/WJZY) — A multi-agency rescue operation managed to airlift a climber to receive medical help Sunday afternoon after a fall in Burke County on Shortoff Mountain earlier in the day.

Around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Burke Rescue teams responded to a high-angle rescue that required an “extended” medical carry-out near Wolf Pit Trailhead on the mountain about three miles north of Linville.
Just before 2 p.m., Burke County Emergency Management said crews were with the patient who suffered “a significant fall.”
According to the Charlotte Fire Department, a climber fell and suffered several fractures.
Later, because of difficult terrain, a North Carolina National Guard helicopter with a rescue team from Charlotte was called to get the injured climber out of the mountains, Burke County officials said.

The person was rescued just after 3 p.m. using aircraft “Kill Devil 244,” a North Carolina National Guard Blackhawk with a North Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team aboard, the NC Emergency Management said.
The crews who were lowered to rescue the injured person were with the Charlotte Fire Department, part of NC HART.
MedCenter Air was expected to meet the Blackhawk at a nearby field, to transfer the patient onto their copter for a flight to a medical facility.
Wolf Pit Trailhead was inaccessible for much of the day and the public was asked to avoid the area.
