Nearly 180 speeders busted in one-day Cumberland County crackdown; NC troopers nab 101 mph driver

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — After a similar operation last month busted more than 280 speeders, various agencies in Cumberland County teamed up for another crackdown on Thursday, officials said.

The groups targeted speeding and aggressive driving in a county-wide operation involving the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Fort Bragg Military Police Traffic Unit, and police with Fayetteville, Stedman, and Spring Lake, according to a sheriff’s office news release on Friday.

“Throughout the day, deputies, troopers, and police officers were strategically positioned across the county to monitor high-traffic areas and highways,” the news release said about the effort called “No Need For Speed.”

Deputies said that 179 speeding tickets were written, with the most — 57 — issued by the Fayetteville Police Department.

The worst speeders busted were by N.C. Troopers catching a driver at 101 mph in a 65 mph zone, and Fayetteville Police nabbed a speeder going 88 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Deputies stopped a Cumberland County driver traveling 87 mph in a 65 mph zone, the release said.

“Speeding continues to be one of the leading factors in serious and fatal crashes,” Cumberland County Sheriff Johnathan Morgan said in the release.

Deputies said that 376 tickets were written and there were 35 warnings.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office

• 44 speeding citations

• 2 fictitious tag citations
• 1 hands free cellphone violation citation
• 2 no insurance citations
• 4 no operator’s license citations
• 1 unsafe movement citation

North Carolina State Highway Patrol

• 35 speeding citations
• 1 driving while impaired arrest
• 18 registration violation citations
• 19 seat belt citations
• 1 each of a stop sign citation and a move-over violation citation
• 4 child restraint citations
• 5 reckless driving citations
• 13 driving while license revoked citations

Fort Bragg Military Police

• 40 speeding citations
• 5 driving while license revoked citations
• 2 move-over law violation citations
• 7 revoked tag citations, no insurance citations
• 10 registration violation citations
• 2 fictitious tag citations
• 3 window tint violation citations
• a careless and reckless citation
• a flee to elude citation
• 2 seat belt citations

Fayetteville Police Department

• 57 speeding citations
• 7 driving while license revoked citations
• 2 move-over law violation citations
• 11 registration violation citations
• 2 seat belt citations
• a window tint violation citation
• a careless and reckless citation

Stedman Police Department

• 2 driving while license revoked citations
• a seatbelt citation
• 2 registration violation citations

Spring Lake Police Department

• 3 speeding citations
• 5 registration violation citations
• 3 window tint violation citations
• One each of improper passing and no operator’s license

“By working together with our local law enforcement partners and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, we are sending a clear message: there is no destination worth risking your life or the lives of others to reach a few minutes sooner,” Sheriff Morgan said in the release.
