New suspect named in Garner teen’s cold case killing in 2004: Search warrant

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — CBS 17 has obtained warrants naming David Anderson a suspect and raising a potential motive in the 2004 Garner death of teenager Joshua Davis.

Police originally ruled Davis’s death a hit-and-run, but are now investigating it as a homicide.

The new warrants, filed October 1,  suggest Davis, 16, died on Jan. 6, 2004, from blunt force trauma to the head, potentially from a bat.

The warrants filed by a Garner Police officer said Anderson was a close friend of another suspect, who was not named in the latest warrants, and police found conversations and internet searches about Davis’s death within his phone.

Warrants earlier this summer named a Four Oaks police officer as a suspect in the death of Davis, who was killed while walking along Hall Boulevard, according to Garner police.

Megan Potter, a Four Oaks police officer, was previously named as a suspect in connection with Davis’s death.

To date, no arrests have been made.

The latest search warrant filed by a Garner Police detective said that “David Anderson, a close friend of Suspect 1,” was a new suspect.

The new warrant, when referring to suspects, possibly hints at a motive in the killing.

“One of those suspects (referred to as Suspect 1) was believed to have been a romantic rival of Joshua Davis,” the search warrant said.

No charges have been filed against Anderson in Davis’s death.

However, the new search warrants said Anderson fled from a traffic stop late last month and was arrested by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol after a lengthy vehicle chase.

After the September 28 chase, Anderson’s phone was collected from a N.C. trooper in the presence of Anderson at WakeMed Garner Hospital, the warrant said. Anderson was at the hospital awaiting medical clearance before being taken to jail on charges linked to the chase.

The phone from Anderson at the hospital was searched by Garner police after a judge approved the search warrant.

“Within the phone were conversations regarding the murder of Joshua Davis as well as internet searches relevant to the case,” the warrant said.
