Nonprofit to host town hall on proposed WakeMed-Atrium merger

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A nonprofit will host a town hall in Raleigh Monday evening on the proposed merger between WakeMed and Atrium Health.

“The Future of WakeMed” town hall held by Action Network will take place at Saint Ambrose Episcopal Church, 813 Darby St. Street in Raleigh. It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m.

The town hall comes after a merger was announced in May between the Charlotte-based Atrium, the largest healthcare system in the state, and WakeMed, one the biggest in the Triangle area. The Wake County Board of Commissioners was scheduled to vote on the merger the following week, but delayed it at the request of state officials.

According to Action Network, Monday’s town hall will feature a moderated discussion about the proposed agreement and how it may impact patients, healthcare workers, taxpayers, and the future of healthcare in Wake County.

The non-profit said the entire community is invited to participate, including WakeMed and Atrium leadership.

“This is a pivotal moment for Wake County,” Action Network said in a statement. “Whether you’re a patient, caregiver, healthcare worker, or simply someone who believes important public decisions should happen transparently and with community input, your voice matters.

“Come learn, ask questions, stand with your neighbors, and help shape the conversation about the future of healthcare in Wake County,” Action Network continued in the statement.
