Pipe break triggers Hillsborough boil water advisory; town buying water from Durham to refill tank

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Hillsborough officials said Saturday morning that all town water users should conserve water after a line break Friday night into Saturday also triggered a boil water advisory for parts of the town.

The overnight water main leak on Elizabeth Brady Road caused “a significant loss of water pressure” early Saturday morning, according to a town of Hillsborough news release.

The 6-inch water main leak also spurred Hillsborough to buy water from the City of Durham to help refill a Hillsborough water tank on Hansell Street, the release said.

Because of low water pressure, town officials first said around 1 a.m. Saturday that areas of town should boil water.

“Boil water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth until further notice as a precaution,” the town said.

“Pressure issues are expected to be resolved by Saturday afternoon,” Hillsborough officials said.

Hillsborough officials said that restaurants and childcare centers must submit plans for operating under a boil water advisory to the Orange County Environmental Health Division.

However, some Hillsborough businesses may choose to close “rather than to operate under their plans,” the town said.
