RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Raleigh crews were airlifted onto a North Carolina mountain on Saturday and rescued a hiker who fell about 50 feet in Avery County.

The incident was reported around noon Saturday when a Grandfather Mountain hiker suffered a “significant” fall, according to the Linville-Central Rescue Squad.
Crews from several agencies, including the Linville Volunteer Fire Department and Banner Elk Rescue, responded to the mountain to access the fallen hiker.
“Based on (the) mechanism of injury and initial medical assessment, it was decided a hoist operation would be needed to get the subject to definitive care as soon as possible,” Linville-Central Rescue Squad said in a news release.

North Carolina Emergency Management was contacted and provided a Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (HART) and task force to rescue the victim from the mountain.
North Carolina Task Force 8, which serves the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area, was selected, according to state emergency management officials.

Raleigh Fire Department members Capt. Daniel Richardson and Senior Firefighter Jason Ceisner were lowered by a copter and rescued the hiker, according to N.C. Task Force 8.
Aviation crews of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol flew the helicopter during the operation, officials said.
“Awesome Daniel and Jason!” the task force said on social media.

The injured hiker was flown to a nearby landing zone, where the victim was transferred to a medical helicopter operated by Highlands Emergency Air Rescue & Transport. The hiker was then taken to a hospital for treatment.
“Linville Central would like to extend our sincere thanks to all who assisted,” the rescue squad said in a news release.
