Raleigh is safest big city in North Carolina, 15th safest in nation: Study

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina is among the safest big cities in the nation, a study has found.

The study from SmartAsset ranked 83 U.S. cities with populations of 250,000 or more based on violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates, and disaster risk.

Raleigh ranked as the nation’s 15th safest big city in the study, with 4.9 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 7.9 auto fatalities per 100,000 residents, and 28.2 property crimes per 1,000 residents, although the city’s disaster risk is considered relatively high.

According to the study, Raleigh is also the safest big city in North Carolina and the only big city in the state to rank in the top 20.

Durham was given an above average ranking as the 34th safest big city in the nation, according to the study.

The study ranked Virginia Beach, Va. as the nation’s safest big city. Ranked as the least safe is Memphis, Tn.
