WRIGHTSVILLE, N.C. (WNCT/WNCN) — Anglers at the North Carolina coast were able to get a glimpse of a rare albino hammerhead shark this week.

Such sharks are very rare in nature because albinism is an extremely rare condition found in sharks. Most of these specimens found in the wild are very young due to a lack of camouflage, which makes it very easy for them to become targets for predators.
This video was taken at the Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier in Wrightsville Beach on Monday. The video showed the 8- to 9-foot shark swimming in circles just feet from the pier.

Crews said they were not fishing for the shark and did not bother it.
Pier owners said that anglers along the structure pulled up their bait to avoid hooking the shark and to protect their gear.
Along with the video, Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier said, that they do not allow shark fishing or any shark fishing gear brought onto the pier.
