RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Vance County man stabbed to death and buried in his own backyard. More than three decades later, his case is still unsolved.

Cecil Larence Chacon, Jr. was a vocational coordinator at Vance County Schools and an Economics and Business teacher at Vance Granville Community College. He was also a Park Ranger with the Army Corps of Engineers and was involved with Scouting America.
In June of 1992, Chacon was driving home from Wilmington when he stopped by his mother’s house. She asked him to stay over, but he decided to drive the few miles back to his house.
Days later, Chacon’s car was found abandoned six miles from home. Deputies did a wellness check, where they found his front window open and the screen lying on the ground.

When they got inside, they found his furniture overturned and dark stains on the carpet.
Chacon was stabbed 25 times, and his body was found buried in his backyard. Deputies say he was dragged more than 140 feet. That was no easy task: Chacon was 6-foot-4 and weighed more than 295 pounds.
