RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Fort Bragg Soldier was shot and killed in Raleigh in 2017. More than 9 years later, his case is still unsolved.

Jose Melendez, Jr. was in Raleigh visiting some friends on Nov. 29, 2017. The Raleigh Police Department said Melendez was dropping off his friend on Raven Road around 3 a.m. when he was gunned down while walking to his car.
In a 911 call, a neighbor stated that they heard gunshots and saw someone on the ground. They also said they saw a figure with a hoodie on running away.
Police said Melendez was shot 5 times.
His work bag and army boots were found untouched. The family believes he was not the intended target.

Officers searched surveillance cameras in the area, but turned up nothing.
Melendez served as a nodal network systems operator for the 528th Sustainment Brigade. Before that, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and served during Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria.
