CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — UNC football’s first home game of 2026 will be missing one element usually seen at Kenan Stadium on game day.

The Tar Heels program is not hosting recruits for the game as part of a punishment for previous recruiting violations. Inside Carolina reports that the program turned itself in for violations, some of which occurred during home games last season, and have been banned from hosting recruits this weekend.
The ban extends to just this game, and won’t affect the five other home games on UNC’s schedule. The punishment is reportedly not related to the ongoing investigation into former general manager Michael Lombardi’s behavior, or into defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is on medical leave.

The Tar Heels host East Tennessee State on Saturday, their first home game of the new season. Carolina traveled to Ireland and beat TCU in the season opener Aug. 29.
