RALEIGH, N.C. The initiative offers up to $35,000 in grant funding per household; online applications are open.

Administered through the Wake County Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department, the program provides financial assistance to preserve existing affordable housing stock. By helping residents pay for critical structural and safety repairs, county officials aim to prevent homeowners from being displaced due to maintenance costs.

Eligible repairs under Resilient Homes cover a range of structural and safety needs, including weatherization, mobility and accessibility modifications, radon and lead-based paint hazard mitigation and updates to unsafe or outdated home systems. The grants can address specific issues such as faulty wiring, plumbing problems, failing heating and cooling systems, unsafe stairs and roof damage.

To qualify for assistance, applicants must have a household income below 50% of the Area Median Income. The current income limits are set at $52,950 for a two-person household and $66,150 for a four-person household.

Homeowners must also hold less than $25,000 in assets, excluding the home itself. Applicants must own a home built on a permanent foundation in Wake County, outside the city limits of Raleigh and Cary and be current on all property tax payments.

Tara Waters, a member of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the financial pressure home maintenance creates for residents. “People work hard to buy a home and build a life there,” Waters said. “Resilient Homes recognizes that investment can help make sure a costly repair doesn’t become an obstacle to maintaining it.”

The new initiative consolidates the county’s existing home repair efforts into a single program while raising the maximum amount of financial assistance provided to each qualifying household.
