CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A 30-inch water main break has closed a portion of N.C. 55 in Cary early Monday morning, officials said.

According to Town of Cary officials, N.C. 55 is closed in both directions between the intersection of Jenks Road and Old Jenks Road and the intersection of Lewey Drive and Turner Creek Road while crews clear debris from the road.
Officials said one lane in each direction is expected to reopen by 7 a.m., if conditions will allow it. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes while the scene is being cleared.
Due to the break causing low pressure in the water system, according to town officials, a system pressure advisory in effect for customers in the central area of Cary and Morrisville.
Customers in the affected area are asked to boil water for one minute or use bottled water while the system pressure advisory is in effect. They are also asked to conserve water when possible as crews work to repair the break, according to town officials.

Officials said low pressure can create conditions that allow bacteria to enter the water. No bacteria has been detected as of early Monday morning.
According to town officials, the advisory is only in effect in the central pressure zone. Customers in the western and southern zones are not affected by the water main break and neither is Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
