RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Oil prices are surging again and President Donald Trump says drivers shouldn’t expect relief anytime soon.
On Wednesday, the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $4.27, according to AAA. North Carolina’s average cost is below that at $3.95, but that’s no consolation prize for drivers.
Josh Amick, a driver filling up his tank for more than $4 a gallon on Wednesday, said, “It’s not great for sure, but, that’s just the way things have been going lately. They just seem to keep increasing. You kind of get used to it after a while.”
Earlier that morning, Trump said, in speaking with reporters, that oil prices are surging because of the Iran War and won’t come down until after the November midterm election.
Crude oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time since July this week., while the national average for fuel rose 7% overnight.

In North Carolina, a gallon of regular gas is more than $1 more expensive than it was one year ago. Drivers are forced to roll with the punches but they’re not happy about it.
“I unfortunately have a car that takes 89 or above, so I have no choice but to get the more expensive gas,” Amick said. “It’s been something I’m kind of used to. I’m definitely not used to spending $65, $70 to fill it up. It was a lot cheaper a couple of years back.”
The average price for fuel in Wake and Durham County is about $3.96.
Those fuel prices don’t just impact commuters. The trickle down effect has already been seen in higher airfare costs.
Higher prices could impact the cost of groceries or other essentials in the long run because those are often delivered by large trucks operating on expensive diesel.
