CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A boil advisory has been lifted in Cary early Tuesday morning following a major water main break the previous day, officials said.

According to Town of Cary officials, crews responded to a 30-inch water main break on N.C. 55 near Jenks Road and Old Jenks Road shortly after midnight.
Officials said they issued the advisory because there was a brief drop in pressure before the break was isolated by 4 a.m., which created a risk of bacteria entering the water. Water samples were collected from the affected area to be tested for bacteria.
Early Tuesday morning, officials said all 14 water samples tested negative for bacteria.
Residents in the affected area may use water normally. They may have air in their pipes and are advised to run water for about one minute to flush. All water-using fixtures, including beverage dispensers, coffee makers, ice machines, and water fountains should be flushed, according to officials.
Officials said any ice and drinks made during the advisory should be disposed of with tap water.
Other than discoloration, according to town officials, no water quality issues were seen or detected while the advisory was in place.
All spraygrounds and fountains have returned to normal operations, according to town officials.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience and cooperation while our crews worked around the clock to make repairs and ensure our water system was safe,” Cary Utilities Director Jamie Revels said in a statement. “We’re grateful to our staff and partners who worked quickly to restore normal service to our community.”
As of early Tuesday afternoon, according to town officials, crews are continuing to make water main repairs. At least one lane of N.C. 55 is open in each direction between the intersection of Jenks Road and Old Jenks Road and the intersection of Lewey Drive and Turner Creek Road.
Drivers should expect delays in the area and are advised to use alternate routes, according to town officials.

Due to the advisory, schools in the Wake County Public School System that were in the affected area dismissed early on Monday.
After the advisory was lifted, district officials said all impacted schools will operate on a normal schedule on Tuesday:
